Thanks to an incredible €550,000 community-funded campaign, the extensive modernization work required to secure GeoServer's future is finished, shipping, and ready for deployment.
What This Community Investment Delivered
Rather than letting technical debt pile up, this coordinated effort brought the entire ecosystem back onto a modern, fully supported foundation:
- A Modern Java Stack: Upgraded to JDK 17, Spring 7, and Jakarta to keep the platform secure and dependable for years to come.
- Modern Raster Processing: Replaced the legacy image engine with ImageN for easier long-term maintenance.
- Reinforced Security: Tightened vulnerability management to meet modern enterprise compliance needs.
- Refreshed Admin Experience: A new context-driven user interface and completely updated documentation.
This milestone lifts the entire ecosystem, shipping hand-in-hand with GeoTools and GeoWebCache to make the suite perfectly suited for cloud-native and containerized deployments. Best of all? For most users, upgrading from 2.28.x is completely straightforward, requiring zero changes to your data directory.
GeoCat's support
GeoCat isn’t just an external donor backing a project; along with Camptocamp and GeoSolutions, we are one of the core commercial pillars holding up the GeoServer ecosystem. When the campaign kicked off, GeoCat immediately stepped up to co-fund the initiative with a direct €50,000 pledge. This upfront institutional backing gave individual donors and smaller sponsors the confidence that the project had the structural safety net required to see the overhaul through to completion.
GeoServer serves as the critical foundation for GeoCat's ecosystem, acting as the core engine upon which we build and deliver our enterprise-grade distribution, GeoCat Map and Saas solution, GeoCat Live.
